With technology changing over the years, phone lines running to a home or business that used to be completely copper wire are now fiber optic wires transmitting information out to neighborhoods and buildings and are only copper when they get closer to the actual phone. The term for this new way of providing phone service is called voice over IP (VoIP). Traditional alarms were not made to use VoIP for communication to a central station. Most systems do work relatively consistently, but some do not work at all.
As technology has changed, alarm system manufacturers have gone to systems that use a cellular communicator or a version of internet communications, many using wi-fi. The most secure way for any alarm to communicate is through a cellular communicator- wires feeding your home cannot be cut to stop communications.
